Manually Creating a Dump File

Description

In some cases, Alpha Technical support will require you send in a dump file that was manually created.

Creating a Dump File for Alpha Anywhere Application Server

To force a dump file to be created from the Alpha Anywhere Application on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, or Windows Server 2008 R2, follow the instructions below.

32-bit Versions of Windows

  1. Run task Manager (you can start task manager by right clicking on the desktop task bar and selecting "Start Task Manager").

  2. Select the "Processes" tab.

  3. Select the process called A5ApplicationServer.exe.

  4. Right click with the mouse and choose "Create Dump File" from the context menu.

64-bit Versions of Windows

The standard task manager is a 64-bit process and creates 64-bit dumps of 32-bit processes which Visual Studio does not like.

To create a 32-bit dump, you can run the 32-bit task manager (c:\Windows\SysWOW64\taskmgr.exe.)

To get a 32-bit dump file on a 64-bit version of Windows for a 32-bit process:

  1. Run c:\windows\syswow64\taskmgr.exe.

You can confirm that the task manager is the 32-bit version because the Image Name column will have an entry with the value "taskmgr.exe *32".

  2. Select the "Processes" tab

  3. Select the process called A5ApplicationServer.exe.

  4. Right click with the mouse and choose "Create Dump File" from the context menu.

Older Versions of Windows

To create a dump file on older versions of Windows (such as Windows Server 2003), you need to download a utility from Microsoft as described in the links below:
